A Joyful Noise is the story of Dorothy, a woman in her 70’s who decides to take up singing lessons for the first time in her life. The show is about finding the courage to do the things that will make us happy. Why is it that we so often think about the happiness of others before we consider our own? Why do we put off until tomorrow the things that will give us pleasure today? I remember thinking when I was in my 20’s that I regretted not having taken piano lessons when I was a teenager. Even in my 20’s, I thought that I was too old to start. I’m in my 60’s now, and I still have never taken piano lessons. Why not? I would love to be able to play the piano. I would love to write more. I can’t play piano, and I don’t write enough. Why not? Intellectually we all believe that “it is never too late”. Emotionally, however, that seems easier said than done. If there is something you have always wanted to do, but never done, it may still be possible. Why not try to do it now?! - Jim Betts, Smile Theatre Artistic Director
