Hysterical History Re-Made in Canada!

Smile Theatre, Canada’s only professional theatre company dedicated to performing in seniors citizens’ homes, care facilities, hospitals and activity centres presents a musical romp through Canadian history in The Son of Re-Made in Canada, written and directed by stage veteran Tom Kneebone. This third instalment of Smile’s Made in Canada cabaret series is collection of Canadian songs and stories woven together to take a look at the lighter side of Canadian historical moments and famous figures. The audience jumps, trips, tumbles and stumbles through time with Rob Torr and Andrew Scanlon who sing and tell tales of the Canadian experience, aided by the sure direction of Tom Kneebone. The production is choreographed by Kari Bodrug, designed by Jennifer Triemstra, with musical arrangements by Mark Rutherford. Daniel Macdonell stage manages the eight week tour appearing throughout Ontario.

Favourite songs include, Vive La Canadienne, Alouette!, Farewell To Nova Scotia, I’s The B’y That Builds The Boat, The Maple Leaf Forever, The Old Apple Tree, Darktown Strutters’ Ball, not to mention a completely unique version of O Canada.

Artist Biographies

Rob Torr
Rob loves coming back to Smile. He’s had a busy year just playing Freddy in My Fair Lady (Thousand Islands Playhouse). The summer before he worked at the Piggery in North Hatley Quebec playing Matt in The Fantasticks and Sebastian in Twelfth Night, and is close to completing a couple of new musicals, Noah and Nickleby.
Andrew Scanlon
Andrew is thrilled to be back onstage with his good friend Rob for this third instalment of Made In Canada. For The Smile Theatre Company, he has also appeared in Mona Parsons and his one-man show Love Knots and Lariats. Other theatre credits include Lucky in Dames at Sea (St. Lawrence Stage Co.), Touchstone in As You Like It (Driftwood Theatre Group) and a season in repertory with Shakespeare By The Sea in Halifax, N.S. Off-stage, Andrew has served as assistant director for Hamlet (Driftwood Theatre Group), Macbeth (Berkeley Street Theatre) and most recently directed the first workshop of Rob’s new musical Noah.
Daniel MacDonell, Stage Manager
Daniel is delighted to be on the road again with Smile Theatre, after appearing in At The Hostess in 1998. Daniel received his BFA in Acting at the School of Dramatic Art at the University of Windsor. Since graduating in 1991, he has worked in many aspects of theatre; Musical Theatre, Dramas, Classical Theatre, Clown, and Opera. As a performer, he has appeared in Les Miserables in Toronto and Ottawa, and two seasons at The Stratford Festival. He has performed across Canada in productions as varied as The Mikado in Victoria, BC, and Aristophanes’ The Clouds in St. John’s Newfoundland.
Tom Kneebone, C.M., O.ONT., Writer & Director
Tom has been the Artistic Director of The SmileTheatre Company for fifteen wonderful years. As a performer, Tom has appeared with the London Old Vic, the Stratford Festival, the Shaw Festival, the Canadian Opera Company, the National Ballet of Canada, the Charlottetown Festival, on Broadway and in countless films and television productions. The Smile Theatre Company is very proud that Tom has been honoured this year with the Order of Ontario, the Order of Canada and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, for his work creating theatre for Ontario’s seniors.

Kari Bodrug, Choreographer
Kari is thrilled to be back working at Smile! A graduate of the York University Dance program, Kari has performed in such musicals as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, South Pacific and Brigadoon. Her film credits include the features Blues Brothers 2000, SuperStar, and Five By Ten, for which she was also choreographer. This show marks Kari’s tenth as choreographer for Smile. Previous credits include Made In Canada, The Judy Garland Story, Mr. Midnight, Honey Bun, and most recently, Two on a Toonie. Kari was also a featured choreographer and performer in both Just Jazz concerts, the first concert jazz dance series in Toronto in over a decade. She has been on the faculties of Burlington Dance Company, Inside Out Productions and Arts York. For the past two summers, Kari has enjoyed touring the United States on the Dance Olympus Summer Convention Tour, performing and teaching Master Classes.

Jennifer Triemstra, Set, Costume & Prop Design
This is Jennifer’s sixth show with Smile Theatre. Other projects include: The Tempest for Festival of Classics, Almost There for Brookstone Performing Arts, Crimes for Alianak Productions, Blithe Spirit for Sudbury Theatre Centre and In The Wings for Theatre Passe Muraille. Jennifer has also designed for Factory Theatre, The Theatre Centre, Workman Theatre, George Brown Theatre School, the Blyth Festival and The Winter Garden Theatre. Jennifer is a costume instructor at York University.
