Will James wrote over thirty novels and two collections of short stories and illustrated them all. He was awarded the Newberry Medal in 1934 and two of his works have been adapted for the screen including his autobiography Lone Cowboy and Smokey. He was acknowledged as one of the foremost authorities on the American West. He was born and raised in Quebec but, throughout his career, he denied his national heritage. Tom Kneebones long time performing partner and Smile advocate, Dinah Christie, returns to direct Smiles first production of the season.

This new musical tells the story of two Canadian army show entertainers who faced the hazards of war in order to boost the morale of men fighting on the front lines. Romance, friendship and the sometimes dangerous work of the Canadian Army Show will be set to timeless music of the era. Sandra Margolese, who apprenticed with Tom Kneebone this season, returns to direct and write the text for this show.

Fred and Adele

Fred and Adele Austerlitz showed such talent as children that when he was four and she was six, their parents, convinced that they belonged in the theatre, bustled them off to New York to embark upon a career in Vaudeville. It was their father whose idea it was to adopt the name Astaire. In 1932 Adele retired from the stage to marry Lord Charles Cavendish, and in 1933 Fred married Phyllis Baker and moved to Hollywood the rest of course is history. Internationally celebrated tap dancer William Orlowski will direct and choreograph this classic from our repertoire.

A musical biography of the Girl Singer, Rosemary Clooney, who scored her breakthrough in 1951 with Cmon A My House and went on to sing the songs of a generation, including Sentimental Journey, Mambo Italiano, Hey There, In the Cool, Cool, Cool, of the Evening and more. This production continues Smiles tradition of detailing the life of a notable, memorable performer.

This show will be written and directed by Dinah Christie with music by Ms Christie. It is only fitting that we celebrate the life of our favourite Canadian cabaret performer in the best way we know how by presenting a Tom Kneebone-style show to the audience who loved him most.
