Artist Biographies
Marnie Kersten, Annie
Marnie is thrilled to be making her Smile debut playing Annie Taylor in Queen of the Mist, a woman she has been fascinated with since childhood. Most recently, Marnie performed the role of Mrs. Meadows in the workshop performance of Fireweeds (Canadian Music Theatre Festival) and Ms. Ward (StageKids). You may also catch Marnie performing around town as one of the Andrews Sisters with the Skylark Trio. Marnie is a graduate of the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts’ Triple Threat program and also holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from Queen’s University. Bill Brillinger, Stage Manager
Bill is pleased to be returning to Smile for his fourth season, after finishing last season with Good Morning Cottage Country. This show also brought smiles to audiences in Montreal, Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo as part of Smile’s planned expansion. This past summer, Bill stage managed for Lighthouse Festival Theatre in Port Dover.
Lezlie Wade Wadley, Book and Lyrics
Lezlie is a writer, director, actor and a native of Niagara Falls. She graduated from the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in NY and George Brown Theatre School. Previous Smile writing credits include Make ‘em Laugh and A Christmas Carol. Directing credits for Smile include The Wilf Carter Story, Stardust Circus, and A Christmas Carol. Most recently Lezlie directed Elegies for Acting Up Theatre Company at the Berkeley Street Theatre and Waiting for the Parade at the University of Toronto. Lezlie was co-founder and Artistic Director of Theatre in Port (1998-2000) and Artistic Director of The Georgian Theatre Festival (2003-2005). She is a member of the Lincoln Centre Director’s Lab and is one of two directors chosen for the ’07 Shaw Festival Director’s Project where she will be working on Mack and Mabel and Summer and Smoke.
Wayne Gwillim, Music and Musical Direction
Wayne is pleased to be working with Smile Theatre again, having recently provided arrangements for At The Hop, Make ‘em Laugh, Radio Daze, Popcorn Princess and How to Get Rid of a Monster. Music direction credits include Elegies, john & jen and tick, tick…BOOM! (Acting Up Stage); Cotton Patch Gospel (Georgian Theatre Festival); Falsettos and Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill (Theatre Sheridan). Wayne serves on the faculty of Sheridan College and the Randolph Academy of Performing Arts as an accompanist and vocal coach. Originally from Saskatchewan, he is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music.
Carson Thomas, Director
Carson Thomas (Tom Carson) is proud to be the General & Artistic Manager of the wonderful Smile Theatre. As a director, his work has appeared across Canada, winning the hearts of audiences from Montreal to Vancouver. He has received critical acclaim as well, including three nominations for “Outstanding Production -- Theatre For Young Audiences” at Toronto’s prestigious Dora Awards. Tom also writes for the stage, as well as, poetry for young children. He is married to wife, Stephanie and has a son, Jonah and a daughter, Samantha. He lives in Milton, Ontario.
Jennifer Triemstra, Set, Costume and Props Design
This is Jennifer’s second season at Smile Theatre and she is thrilled to be back. For Smile, Jennifer has designed set and costumes for this season’s Radio Daze and Make ‘em Laugh, At The Hop, as well as, Beautiful Dreamer, Christmas Lillies, Honey Bun, Mona Parson, Two on a Twoonie, Sweethearts and Son of Remade in Canada. Recent credits include costume and set design for The Fairy Queen (Toronto Masque Theatre) and Iris the Dragon (Workman Theatre) and costume designs for Blyth Festival, Festival of Classics and Theatre Passe Muraille. Jennifer is part-time faculty at York and Ryerson Universities.
